In the classic time of the modern sociology (1945), we studied that the common good is what justifies the authority in the civil society where men live. Thus, the concept of common good is essential in the formation of systems of government, whatever it is (monarchy, republic or democracy).
Everything must come together in the common good, and nothing has reason for living without it. For this reason, the common good affects the individuals that should be aware that here is aired their freedom and their progress, their well-being and their happiness, which belong them by nature, because of their status as a social being, as the Greek philosophers pointed out.
Aristotle (founder of the peripatetic school in Athens) said that the man is a social being. In the Nicomachean Ethics (I, 2, 1094; G. Fraile, History of philosophy) he explains that «the purpose of the policy must be the good of man.»
Although the term «common good» (koinòn agathón) is not explicitly formulated in Aristotle, the phrase koinòn symféron (ibid., p. 546, Note 33) is equivalent. His philosophical intuition has been reflected in the history of human thought, and today it is repeated abundantly by any person with a minimum of culture. Other wise, a prominent promoter of the great cultural heritage of Greece, is Thomas Aquinas who has divulged with great interest this doctrine of Estagiriita and has perfected it with the lights on the Christian revelation.
When they formulate these ideas they thought and felt that are essential values to the good functioning of the society, and must be necessary request urgently controlled by public opinion, in favor of the good health of the social welfare. This explains that its proclamation and requirement are relapses in history. It is recent (March 24 2007) the warning of Pope Benedict XVI to the congress that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the agreements of Rome: «is not surprising that today’s Europe, at the same time that it want to constitute a community of values, seems reject that universal and absolute values exist? This unique form of «apostasy» from itself, rather than God, Does it not lead to doubt of its own identity? In this way is just to spread the belief that the «deliberation of goods» is the only way for the moral discernment and the common good is synonymous for commitment. In fact, if the commitment can constitute a legitimate balance of different particular interests, it becomes a common evil when involves agreements that misrepresented the nature of man.»
This way of thinking and acting that proclaims as absolute purpose of society the good of the State, has ancient and modern genealogy. We have felt it with the communism, disappeared in its original core, although it still persists in the mental sclerosis of some dreamers of rancor and moral ignorance. A forest that tyrants (who personalize the selfishness of the State for their own benefit) like very much. Beyond history recalls the theories of Plato, which subordinated the good of individuals to the good of the State. Colossal nonsense that surprises because with all his grandeur Plato did not know that is not the man for the State, but the State for the man.
By this precipice follows the German philosopher Hegel, patron of the absolutist state, and those who claim that the end of society is the cultural progress of the society and the human race. In these days we cannot forget the socialists, distinguished disciples of the traps of their predecessors, who collect, subordinating also to the good of the society – better said the own well- the good of people, no matter what they say, robbing almost all their rights of the citizens and the families. I quote from memory the «education for citizenship», the shameless tax for dishonest and unmentionable purposes, the waste of public money to silence; the buying votes, the insolent contempt of the citizen opinion, the abortion, the homosexual marriages, the most cynical and despicable corruption, and so on.
What do we do in this situation? In ancient times tyrants were getting rid of easily. With democracy, in view to the psychological terrorism which is worse – the citizens enjoy an irresistible force: the responsible vote. We need to educate the citizen’s awareness in the obligation of responsible vote. The discontent is corrected reproving and moving away the unworthy or incompetent from the public management for ever, they also should be required the responsibility that falls on them. And it not be said that all people are equal or that nothing can be done; that is another huge falsehood. All people are not equal, and if they were, if the person who access the power had the conviction that at the end of the term of office for which he was elected the lie, the business and the trap are over, I would look him. What is useless is the inertia of sit back and spend the day lamenting. Let’s vote properly! And we should not forget this fundamental principle: a community that was built without respect the true dignity of the human being, forgetting that every person has been created in the image of God, doesn’t benefit anyone, and does not deserve regenerate. The common good, the happiness of the man, a creature of God, the son of God, is his destiny and his well indispensable.
