Banknorth supports science education at the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club
Thanks to a grant from the Banknorth Charitable Foundation, 160 youngsters at the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club will be exposed to scientific discovery through the Banknorth Science Club.
This unique program allows members of the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club to engage in a series of twelve fun and educational experiments from a variety of scientific disciplines. At the end of each session, the students take their projects home and explain their scientific creations to family members and friends.
“We are really excited about this program. Most of our children assume science is boring until they realize that scientific experiments can be lots of fun,” said Markus Fischer, executive director.
The Banknorth Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 to cover the costs of a program coordinator and materials. “We believe that all young people can benefit by programs that support their development while outside of a formal academic setting. Programs that strive for a child’s healthy development, mentoring, and skill building are complementary to a formal education. Banknorth supports youth development programs that encourage academic success and leadership skills. We are pleased to support the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club and welcome their partnership going forward,” said Maria Fina, Banknorth Branch Manager in Lawrence.
The Lawrence Boys & Girls Club currently serves over three thousand youth members in four different facilities. The Club’s mission is to provide children with a safe place in which they can have fun, be themselves and develop to their fullest potential.
