Volunteers wanted to participate in work group on youth suicide prevention

Volunteers wanted to participate in work group on youth suicide prevention

NAMI NH in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Partnership and the Irving and Barbara C. Gutin Charitable Foundation will be working on a three year project focused on preventing suicide in teens and young adults in New Hampshire. The Frameworks Project will develop comprehensive protocols to assist communities in responding to youth suicide events (suicide talk, attempts, and completions).

Youth suicide is a tragic public health issue both in New Hampshire and in our nation. Here are a few facts to put the issue in perspective.

   • Over 90% of teen suicide victims have a mental disorder, such as depression, and/or a history of alcohol or drug abuse – often they are undiagnosed and/or untreated.

   • Nationally the Center for Disease Control reports more teenagers and young adults die of suicide each year than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease COMBINED!.

   • In New Hampshire suicide is the second leading cause of death (after unintended injury) for teens and young adults.

   • Between the 1950’s and 1990’s the suicide rate in young people nearly tripled.

   • A survey of 10,000 NH high school students conducted in 2001 indicated 22% had thought seriously about killing themselves during the past month.

The work groups will develop separate guidelines for youth suicide prevention efforts as well as for how to respond to attempts and completions. The goal is to improve communication and interface between systems. Specific protocols will be developed for different disciplines, eg. police, teachers, EMT’s, coaches, clergy, physicians, mental health providers, parents, friends etc. Anyone who has an interest in youth suicide is encouraged to participate. Work groups will meet a couple of hours once per month. For more information please contact Ken Norton at NAMI NH, 225-5359 or knorton@naminh.org
